New stuff I love in Joomla! 1.5x E-mail
Solybarr Blog - Joomla

I started toying with Joomla! 1.5x since RC 2 but it wasn't until I actually tried to build a site that I really saw the cool new things it has. The newest and prettiest ones are:

  • SEF features without having to install an add-on
  • Filtering by Published or unpublished data!
  • One install area for all extensions (modules, components and plugins / mambots)
  • Only one editor window (you can control where the "read more" goes in your content)

One feature I LOVED was left behind, which I did not enjoy at all!.  Every Joomla page had as a title the Site name + The page name, now it just shows the page name.  I am a stickler for the TITLE tag because it tells the search engine searchers what site they are going to.

Basically it saves the site visitors time, and that is mainly what my sites want to achieve.  Great content organized in a way you can find it FAST and enjoy whatever it is your hobby (reading, training dogs, learning languages, knitting, etc).  There is a plugin that does it now, but you can also modify one of the rendering scripts and hard code the site title before the page name is rendered in the title tag, but that just defeats the purpose of using a CMS.

Other fantastic features:

  • Upload of images can be done on any screen (not just the media manager)
  • Basic template parameters can be changed in the control panel
  • More than one CSS allowed for templates (accesible through the Control panel as well)

I have not had a in depth look at it, since a lot of components need to come out compatible for 1.5, but it is a step in the right direction.  I cannot wait until I can upgrade all my sites.  Don't worry about migrating either, there is a component that helps you out and it was pretty easy to run.
